The short answer

Spark plugs likely need replacing if you notice rough idle, engine misfires, hard starting, sluggish acceleration or worse fuel economy. Most iridium or platinum plugs last 60,000–100,000 miles. A check engine light with codes P0300–P0308 often points to plugs or ignition coils.

Symptoms

Shaking at a stoplight, stumbling under acceleration, or a flashing check engine light are the most common signs.

Replacement interval

Copper plugs: 20,000–30,000 miles. Platinum and iridium: 60,000–100,000+. Check your manual.

Coils go too

On coil-on-plug engines, a failing ignition coil causes the same symptoms. We test both.
