Timing Belt & Serpentine Belt Replacement

The short answer

Most manufacturers recommend replacing the timing belt every 60,000–105,000 miles or 7–10 years, whichever comes first. Check your owner's manual. On 'interference' engines, a broken timing belt can destroy valves and pistons, so replace it on schedule — don't wait for symptoms.

Belt vs. chain

Many newer engines use timing chains designed to last the life of the engine. Belts are common on many Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Subaru and older Toyota V6 engines.

Do the water pump at the same time

The water pump is often driven by the timing belt. Replacing it, plus the tensioner and idlers, while everything is apart saves hundreds in duplicate labor later.

Warning signs

Ticking from the front of the engine, oil leaks near the timing cover, or a misfire after a jump in timing are warning signs — but often there are none before failure.
