The short answer

If your dashboard lights are dim and you hear rapid clicking, the battery is the likely problem. If the lights are bright but you hear a single click or nothing when turning the key, the starter is more likely bad. A jump start that works points to the battery; a jump that doesn't help points to the starter.

Battery symptoms

Slow, labored cranking, dim interior lights, a battery older than three years, corroded terminals and a swollen case all point to the battery.

Starter symptoms

A single loud click, grinding when starting, intermittent no-starts that fix themselves, or smoke near the starter all suggest the starter motor or solenoid.

Testing both properly

A professional load test measures battery health under real demand, and a voltage-drop test checks the starter circuit. We test both on-site so you don't buy the wrong part.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can tapping the starter make it work?

Sometimes, temporarily — it's a sign the starter is failing.

How long does a starter last?

Often 100,000–150,000 miles.

Can a bad alternator look like a bad battery?

Yes. That's why we test the whole charging system.
