The short answer

If your car overheats on I-35, turn off the A/C, turn the heater to max hot, and exit or move to the shoulder as soon as safely possible. Turn on hazards, shut off the engine, and wait at least 30 minutes before touching the radiator cap. Then call a mobile mechanic or roadside service.

Safety first on a busy highway

I-35 through Austin — especially between Ben White and US-183 — has narrow shoulders and heavy traffic. If possible, take the next exit to a frontage road or parking lot rather than stopping on the main lanes.

What not to do

Don't open the radiator cap while hot — pressurized coolant can cause severe burns. Don't keep driving with the gauge in the red; that risks a blown head gasket.

Getting help fast

Our mobile mechanics respond 24/7 to I-35 frontage roads, MoPac, US-183, SH-71 and SH-130. We can often replace a hose, fan relay or thermostat right there.
